Chad Walter

Chad Walter joined Carstens & Cahoon, LLP as an associate in 2003, after clerking with the firm the previous summer. Mr. Walter practices all aspects of intellectual property law, including patent and trademark law, with an emphasis on patentability studies, freedom to operate opinions, and patent procurement.

As a registered patent attorney, his patent expertise includes domestic and foreign patent procurement, patentability opinions, and clearance opinions. Mr. Walter has experience in a broad range of technical arts including commercial food processing, packaging, medical devices, filtration, waste management, and petroleum exploration and refining. Mr. Walter has experience serving a variety of clients ranging from independent inventors and businessmen to large international corporations.

Prior to law school, Mr. Walter was an engineer with Koch-TPA, an engineering and construction firm specializing in the design, manufacture, and installation of industrial processing plants. While at Koch-TPA, he was involved in the grass roots and design modification of unit operation components within the sulfur complex of petrochemical refineries including sulfur recovery units and tail gas treatment units. His past engineering experience also includes the preparation and implementation of environmental engineering studies related to risk assessments and the design of systems to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater.

Mr. Walter graduated from Texas A&M University in 1994 with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. He spent four of his undergraduate summers interning in analytical as well as research and development laboratories at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation near Richland, Washington.

Mr. Walter earned his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 2003, where he was Publications Editor for the Houston Journal of International Law. His coursework emphasized intellectual property law and included Patent Law, Trademark Law, Patent Prosecution, and Licensing and Technology Transfer. While in law school, Mr. Walter clerked for the first court of appeals and a federal magistrate judge.

Mr. Walter is active in the community and often volunteers to participate in programs with the local schools, such as career day and law day, and provides pro-bono advice for clients of a local small business development center. Mr. Walter was selected to be a member of the 2007 DAYL Leadership Class and selected as a 2009 Texas Rising Star, an honor bestowed upon less than 3% of lawyers. Mr. Walter is an Eagle Scout.

Mr. Walter is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office as well as the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas.
